Lightness... Blue & White with Caribbean Style

To make the vast double-height living room of this Vero Beach, Florida, house more intimate, designer Tom Scheerer broke it down into three seating groups and a dining area. Lacy carved shutters made in India filter the light.

An Anglo-Indian daybed faces the dining table. The ceiling is covered in Nobilis faux-bois paper. "It fools everyone — and it's much less expensive than real paneling," Scheerer says.

[Image 3 ] Kitchen
Made-to-order kitchen tiles from Cuban Tropical Tiles in Miami give the kitchen a sunny-side-up cheerfulness. Cabinet interiors are Benjamin Moore's Bird's Egg. Floors are stained concrete. Coal Shovel stools by Thomas Moser.

[Image 4] Outdoor Room
The pool is on an axis with the master bedroom. "The bed floats in the middle of the room to take advantage of the view," Scheerer says. "Through the French doors, down the allée of palms and length of the pool, to the pavilion."

Scheerer corralled barware and liquor bottles in a basket with matching napkin caddy: "I put it between the living and family rooms. Bars express welcome and conviviality, and I like them out in the open."

The master bathroom shower was intimidatingly large, so Scheerer put a traveler's palm in it: instant rain forest.

In a boy's bedroom, Scheerer mixed blue, brown, and white cottons, playing with the scale of the prints. The headboard is upholstered in New Batik from China Seas. The brown patterned pillows are by John Robshaw, and the striped ones were recycled from a previous house. Walls are Benjamin Moore's Marine Blue.

In the master bedroom, he covered the walls with a Hinson Madagascar cloth, then painted it with Benjamin Moore's Icing on the Cake in high gloss: "Flat paint rarely does it for me in a new house. I can feel the drywall whimpering through. Grass cloth lends substance." A sinuous Thonet bench counteracts the severe lines of the steel tester bed.

Certainly one I could move straight into... so fresh, clean, contemporary & comfortable. Very easy on the eye!
